Game Overview
Tetris Evolution was originally going to be an Xbox Live Arcade but the powers that be decided it would be better for the game to be released in the shops with case, instructions and disk! Obviously this means the game is going to cost more than it would on the Live Arcade but with a RRP of £19.99, who cares!
As everyone knows Tetris is a Russian block building game with addictive gameplay and a very catchy theme tune, so catchy that since receiving the game from THQ it's all that is being hummed in the office, because, Yes the game does have the theme tune, they'd be stupid to get rid of it to be honest, unfortunately though they have spiced it up and it's not exactly the same as all those years ago, but the tune is still there and as catchy as ever! There is a complete soundtrack to the game as well which includes some really good songs but we found it strange playing Tetris with any other tune. Somehow we think this could be the same for most people who part with their cash for this title.
Tetris has stepped into the 21st century and gone HD (as you would expect, being on the 360, yes, we know, stating the obvious!) but it does it very well and looks very rich and colourful, some of the background pictures that are available look fantastic as well, although in fairness it can't have been that hard for them to develop the graphics side of things with such a simple game, looks good though.
As you would expect the main "Marathon" game mode is there which speeds up as tou progress through the levels however there are a variety of other game modes that in all honesty seem a little pointless. It's quite difficult to understand what you need to do on some of the modes and the instruction manual doesn't really give a great deal away, so you end up playing normal Tetris.
At this point we would like to point out a big gripe about Tetris Evolution, the achievements! How difficult do they want to make it! In order to get the Marathon Bronze achievement you are required to get 200,000 points! HA yeah right! We got to 50,000 points and the blocks were dropping so fast that we couldn't hack it and the game promptly ended. OK so we probably suck at the game but that is one heck of a hard achievement to get, and that’s only the Bronze!! Most of the achievements seem to be pretty difficult to get so any people looking for east points, don't bother!
Multiplayer is the most fun you can have with Tetris playing with mates or online, although the problem being is that because it isn't a massive title there aren't a great deal of people playing it online so you'll end up playing the same guy a few times and some people must have absolutely no life at all as they just wipe the floor with you! Still a good laugh though!

Our Conclusions
Tetris in HD, looks good, sounds good and is once again highly addictive. Unfortunately they have tried to mess about with a winning formula a little bit too much and probably should have stuck to the basic game modes and put it on the marketplace as a download. Don't get us wrong, we think it is £19.99 well spent; it's Tetris so of course it is going to be good but they probably would have got more people playing if it was a £10 game on the Arcade.
Overall Score: 6.5/10
Thanks to THQ
